We at the National Literacy Project are sad to report that, after 20 years of service, we are closing our doors as of December 31, 2020. In these trying and troubling times—a horrific pandemic, travel restrictions, economic decline, and educational uncertainty—we are simply not able to support and further the goals of our organization.

We shall miss the brilliant teachers and administrators who have worked with us over the years and send our heartfelt thanks for your ideas, your commitment to the students we serve, and your courage and dedication in the face of these most difficult challenges. Educators will always have our deepest respect and admiration.

History and Core Beliefs

The goal of the National Literacy Project (NLP) is to improve the instructional practice of teachers and the literacy success of students.

NLP was established in 2000 in Tallahassee, Florida when 100+ educators from throughout the state of Florida came together for an institute to explore best practices in promoting and strengthening literacy instruction in schools and districts. Since then, thousands of administrators, teachers, and students throughout the state of Florida and across the nation have been impacted by the literacy expertise of NLP partners. NLP’s professional development programs, consultant services, demonstration school experiences, and literacy tools and materials are based upon a set of beliefs:

  • Educators are vitally interested in research-based information that will help all students strengthen their literacy skills.
  • Schools have unique cultures and needs that require consultant services that are designed to be flexible and tailored to each school’s needs.
  • Schools must have a cohesive team of district and school-based administrators, literacy and learning coaches, and teachers who are knowledgeable and involved in the literacy efforts for students.
  • Literacy goals and robust standards are essential components of instructional design for all grade levels and content areas.
  • Teachers will embrace new literacy and learning practices when they experience student success.
  • Teachers become the best teachers of other teachers as they mentor novice colleagues and open their classrooms to demonstrate best practices.
  • Students are capable of achieving higher academic success when they are challenged with higher order learning activities, complex text, and rigorous writing experiences.

Literacy Professional Development

The National Literacy Project professionals have experience in educational presentations and services at all levels. Whether a keynote speaker is needed for a large professional conference or a group facilitator is needed to work with a small school department or grade level, NLP Partners can provide consultant experiences designed for any specified group dealing with literacy in all content areas within the school curriculum.

We believe that effective professional development involves providing educators with opportunities to learn about best practices, time to incorporate newly learned concepts in their schools and classrooms, and a context for debriefing and collaboration on “lessons learned.” As a result, we encourage a systematic planning process for literacy enhancement within schools and districts requiring several sessions with follow up collegial discussions concerning classroom implementation and student achievement results.

NLP partners will design specific professional development to fit school or district needs. The following topics can be structured as a two to three hour introduction to initiate educator interest, a three to five day intensive workshop to design curriculum and instruction for implementation in the classroom, or as a monthly series to enhance school best practice. NLP partners will review local evaluation systems, professional development plans and any additional mandates to assure participants that there is a seamless vision for classroom expectations. All professional development can be designed for district staff, school based administrators, literacy teams, coaches, academic department teams, and classroom teachers.

Literacy Design Collaborative (LDC) Module Development and Training

The LDC Framework enables teachers to embed Common Core State Standards and Content Standards into meaningful units of instruction. Whether the content being taught is an important part of the curriculum in social studies, science, ELA or other disciplines within the district’s curriculum, the module approach requires students of all levels to navigate complex text and complete rigorous writing assignments that are integral to the discipline.

With the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, NLP formed the Florida Academic Literacy Network to develop and implement LDC modules. This network of Florida districts and consortia has developed numerous modules with the support of an NLP Partner.

For many years, NLP partners have worked with schools and districts to develop, implement, and monitor a literacy action plan designed specifically to meet the academic and literacy needs of their students.
